Shubhendra Rao is one of the leading instrumentalists of India today. 
A disciple of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, he has been acknowledged by connoisseurs as a worthy 
successor to his Guru's tradition. Critics have been unequivocal in praise.  From a young age, Shubhendra 
showed a great talent for music. His father, N.R.Rama Rao, a noted disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar initiated 
him into the intricacies of the sitar. Shubhendra was fortunate to receive the guidance from the maestro 
himself from the outset. At the age of 18, Shubhendra moved to Delhi to live with and learn from his Guru
in the true Guru-Shishya tradition. The years that followed were a period of introspective and creative 
metamorphisis.  Shubhendra's partner in love and music, Saskia Rao De-Hass, is an accomplished cellist, 
who has adapted western classical music and methods with Indian classical forms, including adapting her 
instrument to fuse more intimately with the stylings of the Indian sitar. This has enabled her to bring out t
he subtleties and the embellishments characteristic of north Indian classical music and nurture the inherent 
closeness of the cello to the human voice. In addition to Indian classical music, Saskia's varied experiences 
include Jewish Klezmer, experiments with the Flamenco guitar, Theatre compositions with guitarist 
Erik Vaarzon Morel, many projects in European folk music and Western classical chamber music. 
These rich experiences have won her a unique place in the field of World Music.
