May 24 - Saturday - 1pm (Lecture/Workshop) How Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Traditional Martial Arts (Kung-Fu) are inter-related and how they both are fundamental roots of Chinese Culture by Dr. Lyla May Yip and Master Wilson Wu Presented by explorASIAN and UBC Department of Asian Studies UBC Asian Centre, 1871 West Mall, UBC 1pm to 4pm - Free admission Dr. Lyla May Yip and Master Wilson Wu will present a workshop on how Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Traditional Martial Arts (Kung-Fu) are inter-related and how they both are fundamental roots of Chinese Culture. Dr. Lyla May Yip, a Canadian born Chinese, studied first at BCIT to become a Medical Technologist. At UBC she obtained her BSc in Medical Sciences and MSc in Health Planning and Administration. It was not until she became a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine that she discovered her calling in life. In order to maintain her own health, Dr. Yip practices Tai Chi, and teaches it to her patients. Master Wilson Wu was born in Guandong province in China. He began practicing Kung Fu at the early age of four. He is currently: President of the Canadian Chin Woo Athletic Association Chairman of the Western Canada Chinese Martial Arts Association Instructor of Qi Gong at the PCU College of Holistic Medicine Head Master of Kungfu Ocean Academy Master Wu teaches various styles of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts such as Tai Chi Chuan, Xing Yi, Ba Gua, preying Mantis and many more. His instruction includes teaching and applying Qi Gong for internal power and health. Dr. Yip and Master Wu have both presented lectures and workshops in their respective professions. Focus will be on: - Prevention of illness through practice of Qi Gong/Tai Ji exercises to enhance health - Acupuncture points - used in defensive/offensive martial art techniques - Application of Traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, acupuncture and tui na massage in sports injuries Basic theories, such as Yin and Yang, 5-Elements and Qi will be discussed. The concepts of health maintenance and enhancing body strength and energy with Qi Gong as well as the treatment of illness and injuries with Traditional Chinese Medicine will be discussed. Demonstrations of Five Animal Qi-Gong and Tai Chi Push Hands will be performed with audience participation. Wilson Wu will also give a demonstration of the Chen style xinyi hunyuan Taichi form.
